Sayings of the Wise - #28 — Guard Against Gloating Over Enemies - (Prov. 24:17–18)

SAYING #28 — Guard Against Gloating Over Enemies

📖 Proverbs 24:17–18
“Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles;
Lest the Lord see it and be displeased,
And He turn away His anger from him.”

🌿 Meaning of the Saying

Saying #28 reminds us that gloating reveals the condition of our heart more than the condition of our enemy.

  • Rejoicing over someone’s downfall is a sign of pride.

  • Delighting in another’s pain is a seed of cruelty.

  • Celebrating judgment invites God to withhold mercy—even from us.

This proverb teaches that wisdom never celebrates someone’s collapse, even if they are in the wrong.
God alone is Judge, and He weighs our reactions as closely as He weighs their actions.

🎭 “The Court of Reactions”

Lady Wisdom enters a courtroom—not to judge the guilty, but to judge the responses of four women who cheered when their enemies fell.

Each woman stands before her, presenting her case.

💚 Woman 1 — The Quiet Smile of Satisfaction

She says softly,
“After everything she did to me, I felt… relieved when she finally stumbled.”

Lady Wisdom looks into her eyes:
“Relief is human, but rejoicing is harmful.
Do not let someone else’s fall become your secret comfort.
Bitterness may feel quiet — but it grows loud in the presence of God.”

💙 Woman 2 — The Whisper of Vindication

“I only thought it in my heart,” she says. “I didn’t say it aloud.”

Lady Wisdom replies,
“Even silent gloating is noisy in heaven.
God sees heart-celebrations as clearly as spoken ones.
Guard your thoughts — for thoughts become testimonies.”

💛 Woman 3 — The Laugh That Masks Hurt

“He hurt me deeply. I laughed because it felt like justice.”

Lady Wisdom speaks gently,
“You were wounded — but healing never begins with someone else’s humiliation.
If you rejoice in pain, pain stays in you.”

❤️ Woman 4 — The Bold Celebration

“I praised God that she fell! Doesn’t He fight our battles?”

Lady Wisdom’s eyes grow firm:
“God fights battles — but never with a gloating heart.
Praise becomes polluted when it rejoices in punishment.”

⚖️ Lady Wisdom’s Final Verdict

“Mercy is your victory.
Compassion is your crown.
Humility is your protection.
Gloating disqualifies you from the kindness you will one day need.”

She raises her hand:

“Bless, even when it hurts.
Pray, even when it’s hard.
And when your enemy falls—
let your knees bend, not your lips curl.”

🌸 Reflection Thoughts

  • Where did I feel a hint of satisfaction at someone’s stumble?

  • What does that reaction reveal about my heart?

  • How can I practice mercy instead of hidden celebration?

  • Who can I release through prayer today?

What stood out to me is that I cannot hide anything from God: “Even silent gloating is noisy in heaven...."

This reply of Lady Wisdom teaches me as a melancholic, that in guarding my christian walk, I should not only focus on my outward appearance, words or actions but I should equally focus on my inner thoughts, because God is omnipresent and all-knowing; He sees, hears and knows beyond my outward actions.

    Reflection Thoughts
    • How can I practice mercy instead of hidden celebration?

    Ans:
By choosing to forgive others and by praying for them even if they have wronged me.

    In conclusion,
I will guard against gloating by seeking Gods gift of awareness and intentionality daily, so that my thoughts and actions will always be guided by God.

    Have a blessed day, everyone!!

Today’s reflection questions led me to search my own heart. The Holy Spirit lovingly showed me where my actions toward someone had been sinful and prideful. When I read Lady Wisdom’s words to Woman #3 — “If you rejoice in pain, pain stays in you” — it was a true eye opener.

Thank you Sister Penny. The Word of God truly strips away the sinfulness from our lives that are sometimes buried on the inside.

    Blessings!!

    Saying #28
God fights battles — but never with a gloating heart.
For me this is so true. I remembered not too long ago at work I made this statement " that's good they deserve it because of their behaviour" Lord forgive me.
    Lesson truly learnt today.
Have a blessed and productive day.

  10. Good morning everyone,

The opening part resonated with me:
"Gloating reveals the condition of our heart more than the condition of our enemy. Rejoicing over someone’s downfall is a sign of pride. Delighting in another’s pain is a seed of cruelty. Celebrating judgment invites God to withhold mercy—even from us. God alone is Judge, and He weighs our reactions as closely as He weighs their actions."

How I respond to my enemy's downfall is a great indicator of the condition of my heart - and that type of reaction is just as sinful as the wrongdoing of my enemy or the one who offended me. It definitely takes the Holy Spirit to empower us to show compassion toward our adversaries! We certainly can't accomplish that in our flesh!

Thank you Sister Pens. I hope everyone has a great day :)
