Sayings of the Wise #17 -Turn from Immorality’s Trap (Prov. 23:26–28)

Saying 17 | Turn from Immorality’s Trap

Proverbs 23:26–28 (NASB 1995)

“Give me your heart, my son,
And let your eyes delight in my ways.
For a harlot is a deep pit,
And an adulterous woman is a narrow well.
Surely she lurks as a robber,
And increases the faithless among men.”

 Welcome to Lady Wisdom’s Lecture

Lady Wisdom stood before the women, her eyes filled with kindness and truth.

“Daughters, God’s first call is not for your hands, but for your heart.
He says, ‘Give Me your heart.’
The Hebrew word for ‘give’  nathan — means to place in another’s care.
When you give your heart to God, you are entrusting Him with your desires, emotions, and direction.
Whoever holds your heart, shapes your life.”

She paused and looked around the room.

“Solomon warns that immorality is like a deep pit and a narrow well.
A pit looks harmless until you slip too close — it’s the picture of temptation that seems small but leads to a fall.
A narrow well promises refreshment, but once you lean in too far, you can’t climb back out — it’s the picture of a trap that starts as pleasure and ends as pain.

Both images reveal how sin works — it lures quietly and holds tightly.”

๐Ÿ’ก Understanding the Imagery

  • “Deep pit” — Represents temptation that begins subtly but leads to loss and regret.

  • “Narrow well” — Symbolizes a false source of satisfaction; it limits joy and freedom.

  • “Lurks as a robber” — Temptation steals peace, purity, and trust without warning.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Charles Spurgeon said,
“Sin first pleases, then enslaves, then destroys. The remedy is not to stare at sin, but to gaze at Christ.”

๐Ÿ•Š Matthew Henry wrote,
“Those who keep their eyes upon God’s ways shall be kept out of the way of temptation.”

Lady Wisdom continued:

“Temptation rarely announces itself.
It might look like affection, approval, attention, or escape.
It whispers, ‘You deserve this,’ but wisdom replies, ‘You deserve peace.’

Immorality is not only physical; it can also be emotional, spiritual, or mental —
anytime the heart turns from God for comfort elsewhere.”

๐ŸŒธ Practical Meaning for Today

“A heart that is divided will always drift.
But a heart surrendered to God finds peace even in pressure.

The answer to temptation isn’t willpower — it’s worship.
You overcome darkness not by fighting harder, but by loving deeper.

When your eyes delight in God’s ways,
your desires grow healthy and your joy stays pure.”

๐Ÿ’ญ Four Reflection Statements

Lady Wisdom smiled and handed each woman a scroll.
“Read these, daughters,” she said, “and see which one sounds like your heart.”  Share your response (the number) in the comments below. (Number 1 is the one without a number).

๐ŸŒฟ Lesson Takeaway — Purity with Purpose

“The pit is deep, but God’s grace is deeper.
The well is narrow, but His mercy reaches further.

God doesn’t just say ‘Don’t fall’ — He says ‘Come closer to Me.’
His goal isn’t restriction, but protection.
The safest heart is the surrendered heart.”

“Give Me your heart, and let your eyes delight in My ways.” — Proverbs 23:26

A Wonderful rest of the week to everyone.  Let's continue to pray for and encourage each other.
