Sayings of the Wise #16 - Esteem & Obey Your Parents (Prov. 23:22-25)

Saying 16 | Esteem & Obey Your Parents

Proverbs 23:22–25 (NASB 1995)

Listen to your father who begot you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old.
Buy truth, and do not sell it,
Get wisdom and instruction and understanding.
The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
And he who begets a wise son will be glad in him.
Let your father and your mother be glad,
And let her rejoice who gave birth to you.

 Lady Wisdom Teaches

“Daughters, this saying reminds us that honor is a language of the heart.
It is not only for children obeying parents, but for all who have received care, counsel, or correction from someone wiser.

  • To ‘listen to your father’ means to show respect for experience.
  • To ‘not despise your mother when she is old’ means to treat those who once cared for you with kindness and patience as they grow older.
  • To ‘buy truth and not sell it’ means to seek wisdom even when it costs your pride or comfort — and to hold onto it no matter what others say.

When you live in wisdom, you bring joy to those who poured into your life.
You become living proof that their love and prayers were not wasted.”

🌸 Lady Wisdom’s Closing Words

“Honor looks different for everyone,” she said softly.
“For some, it means slowing down to listen.
For others, it means saying thank you more often.
For some, it’s forgiving what once hurt.
And for others, it’s showing love through steady, faithful presence.

Whatever it looks like for you — let your heart be humble,
and let your life make those who raised you rejoice.”

💌 Letters of Gratitude — Four Voices at the Table

Each woman wrote a letter of thanks to those who shaped her.
As you read, notice which one sounds most like your heart.

Letter 1

Dear Dad, Mom or Guardian,

I know I’ve often been strong-minded and wanted to do things my own way.
But I’ve come to see how your boundaries were really blessings.
You taught me the value of hard work, honesty, and courage — even when I didn’t say thank you.
Today, I honor you not just with words, but with choices that reflect your lessons.
Your strength lives in me, and I pray my obedience brings you joy.

With love,
Your daughter

Letter 2

Dear Dad, Mom or Guardian,

I can still hear your laughter in my heart and remember your prayers over me.

Thank you for celebrating my dreams even when they changed a hundred times.
I didn’t always listen, but your kindness stayed with me.
You taught me that joy and faith can live in the same room.
I pray my life will always carry that light.

With love,
Your daughter

Letter 3

Dear Dad, Mom or Guardian,

There were times I thought you expected too much — but now I understand you wanted the best for me.

You showed me discipline, thoughtfulness, and how to think before I speak.
Even when I didn’t say it, I admired your quiet strength.
Thank you for teaching me that truth is worth keeping, even when it costs comfort.
I pray my life will bring you peace and pride.

With love,
Your daughter

Letter 4

Dear Dad, Mom or Guardian,

Thank you for your patience with me.

You gave me space to grow and time to learn.
I’ve realized that my gentle nature came from your steady love.
I may not say much, but I feel deeply grateful for every sacrifice you made.
I pray that my calm spirit will always be a comfort back to you.

With love,
Your daughter

Take a moment to think about which words, tone, or feelings reflected your own heart.

  • If your parents/guardian are alive, consider writing or calling them this week to share a few words of thanks.
  • If they’ve passed on, take a moment to thank God for their influence and the lessons that still guide your path.

Which two letters sounded most like something you would write, based on your temperament blend?

    Letter 1 & Letter 2

    Go Deep:
What line or thought from that letter touched you the most—and why?

In Letter 1, this part really resonated with me:
“I know I’ve often been strong-minded and wanted to do things my own way. But I’ve come to see how your boundaries were really blessings.”

I remember during my teenage years, I had a friend who visited me every day. She only lived about a minute’s walk from my house, yet my mother would never allow me to visit her. One day my friend told me that her grandmother had asked, “Why doesn’t Debbie ever visit you, when you’re always at her house?” I couldn’t tell her that my mother simply didn’t want me to go.

Now, looking back, I understand why my mother set that boundary, and I rejoice in it. What once felt restrictive, I now see as her way of protecting me. Her boundaries truly were blessings.

    Blessing!!

  13. Trudy - Melancholic/PhlegmaticNovember 03, 2025

    Good morning everyone!
The letters that sounds most like my temperament blend are #3 and #4.

The line from letter 3 that stood out to me was: You showed me discipline, thoughtfulness, and how to think before I speak. Now that I know more about being a melancholic, I am thankful they had to wisdom to show me thoughtfulness and instil the positive characteristics I see in my temperament.

From letter 4, the line that stood out to me was: "I may not say much, but I feel deeply grateful for every sacrifice you made." As a melancholic/phlegmatic, I know that I might not often express my deep feelings, but I am thankful for my parents and all they did for me!

    Have a blessed day everyone~
