PROMPTS Devotional – Ephesians 4:17–32
Theme: Put Off the Old, Put On the New
Intro – Setting & Aim
The late-afternoon sun spills through the church windows. Bibles are open; notebooks ready. The sisters sit in temperament circles, a quiet expectancy in the room. Pastor Arp steps forward with a gentle smile:
“Welcome back, Wisdom Seekers. Today we continue in Ephesians 4:17–32. Paul moves from doctrine to daily living—what to take off, how to be renewed, and what to put on. We’ll observe carefully, then seek meaning—and finally practice it together. Ask your questions. Engage your hearts. Let the Spirit shape us into Christ’s likeness.”
P – π Prayer
Lord, You have called us out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Today, teach us to truly put off the old ways, be renewed in our thinking, and put on the new self that reflects Your holiness. Let our lives become living testimonies of Your grace. Amen.
R – π Read
Read Ephesians 4:17–32 (NASB & NLT). Paul urges believers not to live like the Gentiles in the futility of their minds, but to be renewed in the spirit of their minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
O – π Observe (5 W’s & H – Group Conversation with Scripture References)
Pastor Arp: “Let’s ask the text our observation questions. Answer with what you see.”
Who is Paul speaking to, and who is he warning them not to imitate?
Debbie: To the believers in Ephesus—and to us (v. 17).
Jesmyn: He says not to live like the Gentiles—unbelievers—whose thinking is futile and whose understanding is darkened, separated from God (vv. 17–18).
What should we put off and what should we put on?
Alanda: Put off lying (v. 25), uncontrolled anger (v. 26), stealing (v. 28), corrupt talk (v. 29), bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, slander, malice (v. 31).
Hazel: Put on truthfulness (v. 25), resolve anger quickly (v. 26), honest work and generosity (v. 28), words that build up (v. 29), kindness, compassion, forgiveness (v. 32).
When do these changes happen?
Ann C.: It begins at salvation but continues daily—“be renewed in the spirit of your mind” is ongoing (v. 23).
Laura: “Put on the new self” (v. 24) is a daily choice.
Where do I still see the old self?
Glenda: My speech—too quick at times (v. 29).
Maria: I sometimes hold onto offenses (v. 32).
Why both remove and replace?
Deborah W.: If you only stop a sin but don’t replace it, it returns (vv. 22, 24).
Michelle: God wants us to reflect His Righteousness and Holiness - R&H - (v. 24), not just be less sinful.
How can we live this out?
Alynthia: Tell the truth (v. 25).
Anne A.: Work honestly and share (v. 28).
Theresa: Settle anger; don’t give the devil a foothold (vv. 26–27).
Claudia: Use words that build up (v. 29).
Well, that’s it for this lesson. We’ll continue with the M (Meaning) the next time we meet.

Going Deep
1. πΊWhich verse from today’s observation do you want to carry with you this week
It begins at salvation but continues daily—“be renewed in the spirit of your mind” is ongoing (v. 23).
πΊOne word
Insightful .
What stood out to me
Put off - uncontrolled anger
Put on- honest work and generosity .
πΊDid you connect more with the challenge of putting things off… or with the hope of putting on the new self?
I thought it was in between , reason being life can throw you some curve ball at times and I am not going to pretend to be perfect, they are shortcomings , there are days I feel like throwing in the towel , there are days I allow persons to get the better side and I allow my self to lash out , but thank God for the holy, he comes right in and tame me when the time is right
πΊWhat truth from today’s text encouraged you most
If you only stop a sin but don’t replace it, it returns (vv. 22, 24)
Have a blessed day everyone
Thanks again sister Gale
This really causes one to reflect..

Theme: Put Off the Old, Put On the New
These are my responses to the questions.
1. Which verse from today’s observation do you want to carry with you this week?
Ans: Verse 24: Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
2. If you had to sum up today’s lesson in one word, what would it be?
Ans: “Change”
3. What is one “put off” or “put on” from the list that stood out to you?
Ans: Put on the new self” (v. 24) is a daily choice.
4. Did you connect more with the challenge of putting things off… or with the hope of putting on the new self?
Ans: I connected more with the challenge of putting things off. For me, it sometimes feels easier to run back and put on something from the “old self” when faced with certain situations. The illustration from Sunday’s message really stood out: we don’t go back and buy clothing we’ve already given to charity, so why should we try to take back what we’ve already surrendered?
5. What truth from today’s text encouraged you most?
Ans: What encouraged me most today is the reminder that God doesn’t just want me to be “less sinful”—He wants me to reflect His righteousness and holiness (v. 24). His Word tells me I’m not simply refurbished, but renewed. I am a new creation in Christ! That truth lifts me because it means my life is meant to mirror Jesus Himself. I’m called to live like Christ, letting His righteousness and holiness, His very nature shine through me.
I also appreciated this note from Charles F. Stanley’s Life Principles Bible:
“When Paul tells us to put on the new self, he means that we have to make a conscious, moment-by-moment choice to depend upon the Spirit’s power to transform us into the likeness of Christ.”
Thank you Pastor Arp.. ππΌππΌ
Wishing everyone a great day

Put Off the Old, Put On the New
1. The verse from today’s observation that I want to carry with me this week is:

2. Summing up today’s lesson in one word would it be:
Impactful
3. One “put off” or “put on” from the list that stood out to me was:
Put off uncontrolled anger (v. 26)
Put on words that build up (v. 29)
4. I’ve connected more with the challenge of putting things off… sometimes it can be so easy to fall back into what feels natural and comfortable but thank God for his Grace. I don't have to conquer it all on my own and I can take one faithful step at a time.
5. The truth from today’s text that encouraged me most was:
If you only stop a sin but don’t replace it, it returns (vv. 22, 24).

Ephesians 4:17-32
2. If you had to sum up today’s lesson in one word, what would it be?
Enlightenment.
3.What is one “put off” or “put on” from the list that stood out to you?
Getting rid of Harsh words. When I am not careful, in the moment my words can be overly criticizing. I hope to see better results in this area of my life.
5.What truth from today’s text encouraged you most?
Ephesians 4:24
[24] Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
This verse encouraged me the most. The putting on part got my attention. It gave me some new prospectives, like much of getting up and getting dress everyday I have to also dress my spiritual life, my attitudes. The put on does not come automatically I have to tell myself every day to put on honesty, put on kind words, put on forgiveness, put on the love of God. And likewise I have to whisper to myself each day put off or get rid of the sinful nature in order for this to become my reality. Being a Christian means hard work, it means mindfulness, it means intentionality.
Bible commentary says this:
Sinful ways, if not subdued and mortified. These therefore must be put off, as an old garment, a filthy garment; they must be subdued and mortified. But it is not enough to shake off corrupt principles; we must have gracious ones. By the new man, is meant the new nature,
Pray for me as I pray for you that we would wear our spiritual clothes well that it will spill over into our physical walk.
Have a blessed day.

ReplyDeleteHere are my Go Deep reflections from today’s passage:
1. Which verse from today’s observation do you want to carry with you this week?
Verse 20: “But you did not learn Christ in this way.”
This verse reminds me that following Christ means living differently because of Him.
2. If you had to sum up today’s lesson in one word, what would it be?
Renewal.
It’s all about putting off the old and walking in the new life God gives.
3. What is one “put off” or “put on” from the list that stood out to you?
Put off: the old self. Put on: the new self.
The old self is filled with deceit, but the new self reflects God’s righteousness and holiness.
4. Did you connect more with the challenge of putting things off… or with the hope of putting on the new self?
I connected more with the hope of putting on the new self. It’s been on my heart, especially when the old self tries to rise up.
5. What truth from today’s text encouraged you most?
That I have “learned Christ.” This isn’t just knowledge—it’s a relationship. Staying close to Him through His Word and prayer helps me grow stronger in my new life.
Altogether, this lesson has really planted truth in my heart, and I pray it did the same for you. πΏ
Have a wonderful rest of the day.
