HOLY

THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD · A–Z

H — Holy

Beholding God’s perfect purity and responding with reverence, worship, and obedience.

Brilliant light can reveal what we scarcely noticed in a dim room. As we draw near to God through His Word, His holiness helps us see both the beauty of His character and our need for cleansing.

God is Holy—perfectly pure, righteous, and glorious. There is no sin, darkness, or corruption in Him. He is utterly unique; there is no one like Him.

There are many words beginning with H that help us describe God. Here, we pause to consider His holiness and what it means for our worship and daily lives.

Bring your Bible and take your time. You may read this devotional in one sitting or return to its sections over several days. Pause to pray, reflect, and respond honestly to the Lord.

“Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”

Isaiah 6:3

Truth to carry: God is holy—there is no one like Him.

Follow the PROMPTS pattern: Prayer · Read · Observe · Meditate · Praise · Thanksgiving · Share. Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV). Select a Scripture reference to read the passage.

P — Prayer

Holy God, open my eyes to see Your holiness more clearly. Help me approach You with reverence and humility. Reveal what needs to change in my heart, and teach me to respond with worship, repentance, and obedience. Thank You that I can come to You through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Ask God to… make your heart sensitive to His Word and help you honour Him in one area of daily life.

R — Read & Reflect

Read slowly. Notice what each passage reveals about God and the response His holiness calls for.

  • “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” — Isaiah 6:3
  • “Be ye holy; for I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:16
  • “There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.” — 1 Samuel 2:2
  • “Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.” — Psalm 99:9
  • “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” — Proverbs 9:10

Pause and reflect: What comes to mind when you think about God’s holiness? How does it shape the way you approach Him?

Picture this: Imagine standing before a brilliant light that reveals what was hidden. Let that picture remind you of God’s perfect purity and His complete knowledge of your heart.

Name it before God: Is He calling you to honour Him more fully in your thoughts, speech, attitudes, relationships, priorities, entertainment, worship, or private life? Bring one area honestly before Him.

O — Observe

What do these passages show us?

  • God is completely holy. The repeated cry in Isaiah’s vision directs our attention to His holiness and glory.
  • There is no one like Him. His greatness and purity have no equal.
  • His holiness calls for worship. We are invited to exalt Him with reverence.
  • His people are called to holy living. Our conduct should reflect the character of the One who calls us.
  • Reverence for God is the beginning of wisdom. Knowing Him shapes how we think and live.

Opinions and social expectations change, but God’s holy character remains constant. His Word gives us a sure foundation for our choices.

Pause: Which observation invites you to worship, repent, or take a step of obedience?

M — Meditate

Holy speaks of being set apart. God is distinct from everything He has made and completely free from sin. He is morally perfect, righteous, and pure in all His ways.

His holiness reveals the beauty and perfection of His character. We can trust Him because there is no evil, deception, or corruption in Him.

Holiness in action: Read Isaiah 6:1–8. Isaiah saw the Lord’s glory and recognised his own sinfulness. God provided cleansing, and Isaiah responded to His call with a willingness to serve.

We need cleansing too. Through Jesus Christ, we can come to God for forgiveness and draw near with confidence. Read 1 John 1:7–9 and Hebrews 4:14–16.

Pursuing holiness is a response to God’s grace. We depend on His Spirit as we turn from sin, obey His Word, and learn to love what pleases Him.

Because God is holy, I can…

  • Worship Him with reverence.
  • Trust the purity of His character.
  • Come to Him humbly for forgiveness through Christ.
  • Turn away from sin and pursue obedience.
  • Seek His help to honour Him in everyday choices.
  • Live in a way that reflects His goodness and truth.

Look back: When has God convicted, corrected, or drawn you closer to Himself? How did you respond?

Faith declaration: Lord, You are holy. Help me honour You with my life and walk closely with You.

A prayer to carry: Lord, make my heart sensitive to You.

P — Praise

Let Scripture guide your worship:

  • Lord, I praise You because You are holy. — Isaiah 6:3
  • You are righteous in all Your ways. — Psalm 145:17
  • There is no one like You. — 1 Samuel 2:2
  • You are worthy of reverence and worship. — Psalm 96:9
  • Your way is perfect. — Psalm 18:30
  • You are glorious in holiness. — Exodus 15:11

Praise pause: Spend a few quiet moments praising God in your own words. You may also sing or listen to a song about His holiness, such as Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

A simple prayer: Holy are You, Lord.

T — Thanksgiving

Thank God for His holy character and His gracious work in your life.

  • Thank You, Lord, that You are holy. — Isaiah 6:3
  • Thank You that Your ways are righteous. — Psalm 145:17
  • Thank You for Your patience and mercy toward me. — Psalm 103:8
  • Thank You that You forgive and cleanse. — 1 John 1:9
  • Thank You for continuing Your good work in Your people. — Philippians 1:6
  • Thank You that I can approach You through Christ. — Hebrews 4:14–16

Make it personal: Thank Him for one way He is teaching you to honour Him. It may involve a changed attitude, a difficult act of obedience, or a growing desire for His Word.

Choose one word for your worship or thanksgiving: Pure · Righteous · Glorious · Majestic · Perfect · Worthy · Awesome. You may choose your own.

S — Share

Your turn in the comments

You may answer one or both questions:

  1. Has this reflection encouraged you to approach God with greater reverence? You may simply answer Yes, or I am learning to honour Him more fully.
  2. Which Scripture, phrase, or truth stood out to you?

You are also welcome to complete: “Because God is holy, I can ________.”

If you wish, share a word of praise, a brief reflection, or simply type “Holy is the Lord.” Share only what you feel comfortable making public.

If you would like help getting started:

  • I am thankful that God’s character is completely pure and trustworthy.
  • This study reminded me to worship with reverence.
  • I want my everyday choices to honour the Lord.
  • A Scripture I want to carry with me is ________.

Consider sharing this devotional with a friend. Discuss how reverence for God can shape daily life, and pray for one another as you seek to obey His Word.

A Closing Pause — Praise God for Who He Is

Let these declarations lead you into worship:

  • Almighty: When my strength ends, His power does not.
  • Benevolent (Good): His goodness is constant.
  • Compassionate: He sees my tears and knows my needs.
  • Deliverer: He rescues and sustains His people.
  • Eternal: Before time began, He was God. Through every generation, He remains.
  • Faithful: Circumstances may change, but God keeps His Word.
  • Gracious: He gives mercy, forgiveness, and help we could never earn.
  • Holy: Pure in every way. Righteous in every act. Perfect in all His ways.

Even when life is difficult, we can praise Him for who He is. The more clearly we see God, the more sincerely we worship, trust, and thank Him.

“Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.” — Psalm 145:3

Live with this truth: Return to one of these Scriptures in the days ahead. Choose one area of your life to bring before God, and take a practical step of obedience in dependence on His help.

Because God is holy, I can worship Him with reverence and seek to honour Him with my life.

Love God. Love Others. Stay the Course in the Word.
