Benenevolent

B — Benevolent

From 26 Letters, One Magnificent God
An A–Z journey through the attributes of God

Welcome. Settle in for a few quiet moments. Perhaps you have a cup of tea or coffee beside you. Before you think about everything that needs your attention, pause to remember that you are already receiving the goodness of God.

Picture a neighbour coming home after several days away. She sets down her bags and looks towards the garden, expecting to find drooping flowers. Instead, the pots are watered, and the little plants are standing well.

The neighbour next door has been caring for them.

“Thank you,” she says. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“I know,” he replies with a smile. “I just wanted them to be here for you when you came home.”

Kindness sometimes reaches us before we even know to ask.

That small scene offers a glimpse of benevolence—the desire to do good, expressed in generous care. God’s goodness is far greater than our best acts of kindness. It flows from who He is.

Many words beginning with B can help us praise God. Today, we will linger over one: Benevolent.

Key Scripture: Psalm 145:8–9

Big Idea: Because God is benevolent, I can receive His goodness with gratitude and reflect His kindness to others.

A gentle way to read: Follow the PROMPTS below at your own pace. You can pause to pray or reflect wherever a thought speaks to you.

P — Pray

“Father, help me notice Your goodness today. Give me a grateful heart for the gifts I often pass over, and teach me to extend kindness as I receive it from You. Amen.”

R — Read

Read Psalm 145:8–9 slowly. Then read Matthew 5:43–48, noticing verse 45.

As you read, notice how widely God’s goodness reaches.

O — Observe

The psalm portrays God as patient, compassionate, and generous in love. His care extends throughout His creation.

Jesus points to sunlight and rain as signs of the Father’s generosity. People who honour God and people who reject Him both benefit from these gifts. Jesus uses that picture to teach His followers to love even their enemies.

God’s benevolence reaches beyond a kindness exchanged between friends. His example invites us to do good without first asking what we will receive in return.

M — Meditate

Think of one ordinary gift you received today: a meal, fresh water, morning light, or someone’s thoughtful care.

You may be walking through a difficult season. There is room to bring your sorrow to God while also receiving a small gift with thanks. Gratitude can begin quietly, right where you are.

What gift might you notice differently if you received it as an expression of God’s goodness?

P — Practice

Thank God for one specific gift today. Then choose one simple way to offer kindness without expecting repayment.

It may be a thoughtful message, help with an errand, a shared meal, or a patient response. Ask God to show you a kindness that fits the strength and resources you have.

T — Treasure

Truth to Treasure: God’s goodness flows from His character. I can receive His gifts with thanks and share His kindness freely.

Complete this sentence for yourself:
Because God is Benevolent, I can ____________________.

Keep your words somewhere you can return to them. Let them remind you to notice goodness and make room for kindness.

S — Share

What is one gift you are thanking God for today?

You are welcome to share in the comments, write your “Because God is Benevolent…” sentence, or simply type “Amen.” Your words may encourage someone else to notice His goodness.

A thought to carry with you

When you lift your next cup of tea or coffee, let that familiar moment become a small invitation to give thanks. Notice one gift. Receive it with gratitude. Then ask whose day you might brighten with a little kindness.

Ask God to… open your eyes to His goodness and guide you towards one simple act of generosity.

“The LORD is good to all”
— Psalm 145:9, ESV

Carry this truth with you in the days ahead.

Love God.
Love Others.
Stay the Course in the Word.

    1. Hello Ladies
This has been so timely for me. I remember a few weeks ago ,hearing God say to me my "GOODness and Mercy will follow you."
and I have struggled with God's Goodness. This B( benevolent) study shapped something different in me but also revealed my heart. I have been expecting from God like my earthly Father- not thinking that God has my back and that he cares for me. This reminded me also of Sis Debbie recent Blog post- how God cares for the little things.
So this has left my heart tender and I know that there will be more learning on the way but this week "I Thank God for his goodness towards me"
