🔥 The Flame That Still Burns

Jesmyn stood quietly at the front as the last few conversations around the room settled.
Jesmyn: “Good evening, Women of Wisdom.”
Her voice was soft, but the room quieted immediately.
Jesmyn: “Gale asked me to facilitate in her place for this last lesson.”
Lilly: “We’ll be gentle with you.”
Jesmyn smiled.
Jesmyn: “I appreciate the warning.”
The ladies laughed.
Jesmyn: “If this is your first time joining us, welcome.”
“If you have been here from A all the way to Z, welcome back.”
“And if you joined somewhere in the middle, missed a few studies, returned after a break, or only recently discovered this journey...”
Jesmyn: “Last week, we studied Y — Yahweh and were reminded that the great I AM is eternal, self-existent, faithful and present.”
She paused and glanced toward the alphabet displayed nearby.
Jesmyn: “And today... we have reached Z.”
A few smiles moved around the table.
Maria: “We actually made it.”
Jesmyn: “We did.”
“But I want to tell you now—today is the final letter, but it is not our final gathering around these attributes.”
Abigail: “So Z is not goodbye.”
Jesmyn: “Not at all.”
“Today we finish the alphabet. Then we gather the treasures.”
She turned toward Pastor Penny.
Jesmyn: “Pastor Penny, would you take us into our final attribute?”``````
🙏 P — PRAY
Invite God to search and rekindle the heart.
Jesmyn: “Antonia, would you open us in prayer?”
Antonia: “Yes.”
Zealous God,
Thank You that You are never indifferent toward Your glory, Your purposes or Your people.
Thank You that You do not abandon the work You begin.
Search our hearts and show us where we have become distracted, half-hearted or spiritually dull.
Renew our desire to know You, obey You, worship You and live wholeheartedly for Your glory.
As we study Your Word, help us understand Your holy zeal rightly.

🔥 The Lesson Begins
Pastor Penny wrote one word on the board:
Pastor Penny: “The word zeal can make people uncomfortable because human zeal is not always admirable.”
“People can be passionate and still be wrong.”
“We can be intense without being wise.”
“We can be enthusiastic about something selfish.”
Barbara: “So God’s zeal cannot be understood simply by magnifying human passion.”
Pastor Penny: “Exactly.”
His zeal is not reckless.
It is not selfish.
It is not unstable emotion.
It is holy.
Wise.
Righteous.
Pure.
Unwavering.
Agneta: “So His zeal is consistent with every other attribute we have studied.”
Pastor Penny: “Precisely.”```
🔥 The Flame That Still Burns
Pastor Penny: “Think of the journey we have taken.”
Week after week, we encountered different truths about God.
Some comforted us.
Some corrected us.
Some challenged what we believed.
Some gave language to what we already knew but had never named.
Michelle: “And our circumstances changed while we were studying.”
Pastor Penny: “Yes.”
Yet through all the changing weeks:
God remained Faithful.
God remained Holy.
God remained Loving.
God remained Sovereign.
God remained Wise.
God remained Yahweh.
And now, at Z, Scripture reminds us that God has not become tired of His purposes.
His zeal has not cooled.
His commitment has not weakened.
His purposes have not been forgotten.
Claudia: “So the flame represents more than enthusiasm. It represents God’s continuing commitment.”
Pastor Penny: “Exactly.”

Debbie: “The word that keeps jumping out to me is ‘perform.’ God does not just intend something and then forget it.”

What does the text reveal?
Pastor Penny: “What do you notice before we move into interpretation?”
Agneta: “In Isaiah 9, God’s zeal is connected to establishing righteousness, justice and the kingdom.”
Pastor Penny: “Yes.”
Theresa: “His zeal produces action. It is not passive concern.”
Pastor Penny: “Important.”
Jacintha: “Jesus’ zeal is connected to the honour of His Father’s house.”
Pastor Penny: “Exactly.”
Anne: “Titus moves from God’s saving work to a people who become zealous for good works.”
Pastor Penny: “Very good.”
- God is actively committed to accomplishing His purposes.
- His zeal is connected to righteousness, justice and His kingdom.
- God is not indifferent toward what honours or dishonours Him.
- Jesus displayed holy zeal for His Father’s house.
- God’s saving work produces a people devoted to good works.
- God’s zeal is consistent with His holiness, wisdom and love.
Michelle: “So holy zeal is never separated from holy character.”
Pastor Penny: “Precisely.”
💡 M — MEANING
What does it mean that God is Zealous?
Pastor Penny: “To say that God is Zealous means that He is intensely and perfectly committed to His glory, His holy purposes and what is right.”
GOD DOES NOT BECOME DISTRACTED.
GOD DOES NOT ABANDON HIS PURPOSES.
GOD DOES NOT GROW WEARY OF BEING FAITHFUL.
Trudy: “So God’s zeal gives us confidence because He is not half-hearted about what He purposes.”
Pastor Penny: “Exactly.”
The Almighty God has power.
The Wise God knows perfectly what should be done.
The Faithful God keeps His promises.
The Sovereign God rules over all.
And the Zealous God is wholly committed to His righteous purposes.
Barbara: “Those attributes reinforce one another.”
Pastor Penny: “Yes. Which is one reason the finale will matter.”
“We have studied these truths one by one, but they belong to the one undivided character of God.”```
🔥 What About My Flame?
Pastor Penny: “God’s zeal comforts us, but it also confronts us.”
“If God is wholehearted in what is holy, what should our response be?”
Tessie: “Not half-hearted.”
Pastor Penny: “Exactly.”
Half-hearted worship.
Half-hearted obedience.
Half-hearted prayer.
Half-hearted devotion.
These are worth examining.
Cassandra D.: “But we should be careful not to confuse wholeheartedness with constant emotional intensity.”
Pastor Penny: “Excellent distinction.”
Spiritual zeal does not mean you always feel energetic.
It does not mean your personality becomes loud.
It does not mean every day feels emotionally powerful.
Jesmyn: “So quiet faithfulness can still be wholehearted.”
Pastor Penny smiled.
Pastor Penny: “Very much so.”
Zeal can look like showing up.
Praying again.
Obeying quietly.
Refusing compromise.
Serving faithfully.
Continuing when nobody applauds.
Claudia: “Then zeal has endurance in it.”
Pastor Penny: “Yes.”

Let what you have learned become more than information.
Pastor Penny: “At Z, I want us to look backward before we move forward.”
“Think over this entire journey.”

Hazel: “The question then becomes whether those truths stay in our notes or enter our lives.”
Pastor Penny: “Exactly.”
become more than information.
Let it shape the way I live.
Alynthia: “Then the real measure of the journey is not whether we can recite twenty-six words.”
Pastor Penny: “Correct.”
“It is whether knowing God more deeply changes our trust, worship and obedience.”
💎 T — TREASURE
Carry the whole journey forward.
Pastor Penny: “This week our treasure is larger than a single attribute.”
but the journey of knowing God never does.
Other truths worth carrying:
- God is wholehearted in His purposes.
- God does not abandon what He begins.
- God’s zeal never fades.
- Quiet faithfulness can still be wholehearted devotion.
- I want what I know about God to shape how I live.
- There is always more to know and treasure about God.

Pastor Penny: “As it should.”

Let one remembered truth encourage someone else.
Pastor Penny: “One of the best ways to preserve learning is to speak about it.”

Pastor Penny looked toward the alphabet one final time.
Pastor Penny: “We should never make the mistake of thinking we have divided God into twenty-six pieces.”
“The Almighty God is also the Compassionate God.”
“The Holy God is also the Loving God.”
“The Just God is also the Merciful God.”
“The Sovereign God is also the Wise God.”
“The Yahweh who is self-existent is also the Zealous God who draws near and keeps covenant.”
Michelle: “Twenty-six windows. One God.”
Pastor Penny: “Exactly.”
We have not exhausted Him.

Jesmyn: “Barbara, would you close our teaching time in prayer?”
Barbara: “Yes.”
Zealous and Holy God,
Thank You that Your purposes do not weaken and Your faithfulness does not fade.
Thank You for everything You have shown us throughout this journey.
Keep us from treating these truths as information only.
Let what we know about You shape our worship, our choices, our relationships, our prayers and our obedience.
Where our hearts have grown cold, rekindle them.
Where we have become distracted, refocus us.
Where we have been half-hearted, teach us quiet and faithful wholeheartedness.
Above all, continue to draw us into a deeper knowledge of who You are.

“We close the book.”
“We turn off the light.”
“We blow out the candle.”
She paused.
Jesmyn: “But I don’t think we should blow this one out.”
The room became still.
Jesmyn: “The alphabet is finished.”
“The learning is not.”
“The weekly letters are finished.”
“The worship is not.”
“The series is almost finished.”
“The journey of knowing God is not.”
simply because we reached Z.
Jesmyn: “And remember—there is still one gathering left.”
🌟 THE BIG FINALE 🌟
Twenty-six attributes.
Twenty-six weeks.
One magnificent God.
Jesmyn: “Come back for the finale.”
“Bring the attribute that changed you.”
“Bring the Scripture you are still carrying.”
“Bring the truth you do not want to forget.”
“We are going to gather them all around the table.”
Debbie: “Now that sounds like a celebration.”
Jesmyn smiled.
Jesmyn: “A quiet one until you arrive, perhaps.”
The room laughed.
🔥 The flame is still burning.
🌿 The journey is still continuing.
🌟 And the Big Finale is still ahead.
