THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD · A–Z

Y — Yahweh

I AM

When a task feels larger than our strength, we often ask, “Who am I to do this?” Moses asked that question when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt. God answered with a promise: “Certainly I will be with thee.”

At the burning bush, Moses encountered the holy God who saw His people’s suffering, heard their cries, and acted in faithfulness to His promises.

Here, we consider Y — Yahweh, God’s personal covenant name, associated in Exodus 3 with His declaration “I AM THAT I AM.” This lesson invites us to worship the eternal God who reveals Himself and remains faithful to His people.

Bring your Bible and take your time. Read slowly, pause to reflect, and approach God with reverence and trust.

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM.”

Exodus 3:14

Truth to carry: Yahweh is the eternal, self-existent, faithful God who is present with His people.

Follow the PROMPTS pattern: Prayer · Read · Observe · Meditate · Praise · Thanksgiving · Share. Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV). Select a Scripture reference to read the passage.

P — Prayer

Yahweh, thank You that You are the great I AM. Help me worship You with reverence, trust Your promises, and depend on Your care. When I feel inadequate, remind me of Your sufficiency. Open my understanding as I read Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ask God to… deepen your knowledge of Him and help you depend on His faithfulness rather than your own strength.

R — Read & Reflect

Read Exodus 3:1–15 in full. Notice what God reveals about Himself before Moses begins his assignment.

  • “For the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” — Exodus 3:5
  • “For I know their sorrows.” — Exodus 3:7
  • “Certainly I will be with thee.” — Exodus 3:12
  • “I AM THAT I AM.” — Exodus 3:14
  • “This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” — Exodus 3:15
  • “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” — John 8:58

Pause and reflect: Which phrase stands out? What does it teach you about the God who calls His people to trust Him?

Name it before God: Bring Him an area where you feel weak, uncertain, or in need of His help.

O — Observe

  • God is holy. Moses is called to respond with reverence.
  • God reveals Himself personally. He calls Moses by name and identifies Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  • He sees, hears, and knows His people’s suffering. Their sorrows do not escape His notice.
  • He promises Moses His presence. Moses is to depend on the One sending him.
  • God’s name endures. His revelation points beyond one moment to all generations.
  • Jesus declares, “Before Abraham was, I am.” His words direct our attention to His divine identity.

Pause: Which observation helps you trust God more deeply?

M — Meditate

Yahweh is God’s personal covenant name. In many English Bibles, it is represented by LORD in small capitals. Exodus 3 connects the revelation of this name with God’s declaration, “I AM THAT I AM.”

God is eternal and self-existent. He receives His existence from no one and depends on nothing outside Himself. Yet the God who needs nothing from creation chooses to reveal Himself and care faithfully for His people.

At the burning bush, God’s greatness and His nearness meet. He is holy, and He knows His people’s sorrows. He sends Moses and promises to be with him.

That promise did not make Moses’ assignment easy. It gave him reason to obey in dependence on God. We also approach God with reverence, bring Him our needs, and trust His faithfulness through Christ.

Because God is Yahweh, I can…

  • Worship Him as the eternal, self-existent God.
  • Trust His enduring faithfulness.
  • Bring my fears and sorrows to Him honestly.
  • Depend on His strength rather than pretend I am sufficient.
  • Seek His direction and obey His Word.

A practical response: Before a difficult responsibility or conversation, pause to pray. Remember who God is, consider what His Word calls you to do, and take one faithful step.

Look back: When has God sustained you through something beyond your own strength? Thank Him.

Faith declaration: Yahweh is eternal, faithful, and sufficient. I will depend on Him and walk in His ways.

A prayer to carry: Lord, help me rest in Your faithful care.

P — Praise

Praise God for who He reveals Himself to be.

  • You are holy and worthy of reverence. — Exodus 3:5
  • You remain faithful to Your people through generations. — Exodus 3:6
  • You see suffering and hear cries for help. — Exodus 3:7
  • You are the great I AM. — Exodus 3:14
  • Your name endures forever. — Exodus 3:15

Praise pause: Continue in your own words. Let what God has revealed lead you into worship.

T — Thanksgiving

  • Thank You for making Yourself known. — Exodus 3:14–15
  • Thank You that suffering does not escape Your notice. — Exodus 3:7
  • Thank You for the presence You promised Moses. — Exodus 3:12
  • Thank You for Your faithfulness through generations. — Exodus 3:6, 15

Make it personal: “Lord, thank You for helping me when ________.”

Choose one word of thanksgiving: Eternal · Present · Faithful · Sufficient · Holy · Near. You may choose your own.

  2. Which Scripture or word would you like to carry with you: Present, Faithful, Sufficient, Near, Holy, Eternal, or another?

You are also welcome to complete: “Because God is Yahweh, I can ________.”

If you wish, share a word of thanksgiving or simply type “Amen.” Share only what you feel comfortable making public.

If you would like help getting started:

  • I am thankful that Yahweh is faithful and present.

A Closing Pause — Praise God for Who He Is

Take a moment to worship God for the fullness of His wonderful character:

Almighty · Benevolent (Good) · Compassionate · Deliverer · Eternal · Faithful · Gracious · Holy · Immutable · Just · King · Love · Merciful · Near · Omnipresent · Provider · Quickener · Righteous · Sovereign · Trustworthy · Unchanging · Victorious · Wise · eXhaustless · Yahweh

You may still have questions about the road ahead. Return to what God has revealed: He is holy, faithful, and sufficient. Through Christ, you can draw near and depend on Him.

Live with this truth: Return to one Scripture from this study. Bring your concern to God, depend on His help, and choose one faithful response.

The eternal I AM remains faithful to His people.

Love God. Love Others. Stay the Course in the Word.
