THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD · A–Z
W — Wise
The Wisdom Library
A library may hold more books than we could read in a lifetime. Yet even its fullest shelves cannot answer every question about our lives. We may still wonder which decision to make, why a door closed, or how to face an uncertain future.
God’s understanding has no such limits. He knows what we cannot see and understands what we cannot yet explain. His wisdom is perfect.
Here, we turn our hearts toward W — Wise—the God who perfectly knows the best way to accomplish His good and holy purposes.
You are welcome to begin with your questions. Bring your Bible, read slowly, and pause to pray. There is no need to complete every section in one sitting.
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
Truth to carry: Because God is wise, I can trust His way even when it is not the way I would have chosen.
Follow the PROMPTS pattern: Prayer · Read · Observe · Meditate · Praise · Thanksgiving · Share. Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV). Select a Scripture reference to read the passage.
P — Prayer
Wise God, thank You that Your understanding is perfect. Teach me to seek Your wisdom, trust Your Word, and follow Your direction. Give me humility to recognise the limits of my perspective and courage to obey You. Help me take the next faithful step. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Ask God to… give you wisdom for a decision, patience while you wait, and a willing heart to follow what His Word teaches.
R — Read & Reflect
Read these passages slowly. Notice the greatness of God’s wisdom and His invitation to seek Him.
- “For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?” — Romans 11:33–36
- “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5
- “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.” — Proverbs 3:5–7
- “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” — Isaiah 55:8–9
Pause and reflect: Which word or phrase encourages you? What does it reveal about God and your need for His wisdom?
Name it before God: Bring Him an area where you need direction—relationships, family, work, finances, spiritual growth, or a difficult decision.
O — Observe
What do these passages reveal?
- God’s wisdom exceeds our understanding. Romans 11 leads us to worship rather than claim complete knowledge of His ways.
- God needs no counsellor. His wisdom does not depend on advice from His creation.
- He generously gives wisdom. James invites those who lack wisdom to ask Him.
- Trust requires humility. Proverbs calls us to acknowledge God and turn away from evil.
- His thoughts and ways are higher than ours. Isaiah places this truth alongside an invitation to seek the Lord and receive His mercy.
Pause: Which observation challenges you to depend more fully on God?
M — Meditate
God is wise. He knows completely and acts in perfect agreement with His goodness, holiness, and purposes. Nothing escapes His understanding.
Our decisions come from partial knowledge. God’s wisdom is never limited in that way. We can bring Him questions without assuming that our lack of understanding means His wisdom has failed.
Trusting His wisdom does not require us to call evil good, minimise grief, or pretend a painful experience makes sense. We can lament, seek help, and pursue what is right while resting in His character.
Asking for wisdom also differs from demanding certainty about every outcome. God has given us His Word to guide our conduct. We can study it carefully, seek godly counsel, and act responsibly without knowing every detail of the future.
Because God is wise, I can…
- Ask Him for wisdom instead of pretending I have every answer.
- Trust His character when His ways exceed my understanding.
- Let Scripture guide my choices.
- Receive sound counsel with humility.
- Obey what He has revealed while unanswered questions remain.
- Entrust the future to His care.
A practical response: Choose one decision to bring before God. Pray for wisdom, consider what Scripture teaches, and seek trustworthy counsel where needed. Then identify the next faithful step you can take.
Look back: When has God’s Word helped you respond wisely? Thank Him for what He taught you.
Faith declaration: Because God is wise, I will seek His wisdom and trust His character beyond what I can presently understand.
A prayer to carry: Lord, give me wisdom to take the next right step.
P — Praise
Praise God for His perfect wisdom.
- Lord, I praise You for the depth of Your wisdom and knowledge. — Romans 11:33
- You need no counsellor. — Romans 11:34
- All glory belongs to You. — Romans 11:36
- You generously give wisdom to those who ask. — James 1:5
- You direct those who acknowledge You. — Proverbs 3:6
- Your thoughts and ways are higher than ours. — Isaiah 55:8–9
Praise pause: Continue in your own words. Let the greatness of God’s wisdom draw your heart into worship.
T — Thanksgiving
Thank God for the wisdom and guidance He offers.
- Thank You that Your wisdom reaches beyond my understanding. — Romans 11:33
- Thank You that Your knowledge depends on no human counsellor. — Romans 11:34
- Thank You that I can ask You for wisdom. — James 1:5
- Thank You for giving generously without reproaching me for my need. — James 1:5
- Thank You for guiding me as I acknowledge You. — Proverbs 3:6
- Thank You that Your ways are higher than mine. — Isaiah 55:9
Make it personal: Complete this sentence in prayer: “Lord, thank You for giving me wisdom when ________.”
Choose one word of thanksgiving: Wisdom · Guidance · Discernment · Patience · Humility · Assurance. You may choose your own.
S — Share
Your turn in the comments
You may answer one or both questions:
- Has this reflection encouraged you to seek God’s wisdom? You may simply answer Yes, or I am learning to ask Him before rushing ahead.
- Which Scripture or truth about His wisdom would you like to carry with you?
You are also welcome to complete: “Because God is wise, I can ________.”
If you wish, share a word of thanksgiving or simply type “Amen.” Share only what you feel comfortable making public.
If you would like help getting started:
- God’s wisdom sees what my understanding cannot.
- I can ask God for wisdom.
- I do not need every answer to take the next faithful step.
- A Scripture I want to carry with me is ________.
You may share this devotional with someone facing a decision. Listen carefully, offer to pray for wisdom, and encourage them to seek God through His Word.
A Closing Pause — Praise God for Who He Is
God’s wisdom belongs to the fullness of His wonderful character. Take a moment to thank Him:
Almighty · Benevolent (Good) · Compassionate · Deliverer · Eternal · Faithful · Gracious · Holy · Immutable · Just · King · Love · Merciful · Near · Omnipresent · Provider · Quickener · Righteous · Sovereign · Trustworthy · Unchanging · Victorious · Wise
There may be parts of your life you cannot yet understand and decisions for which you wish you had more information. You can still ask God for wisdom, search His Word, and take the next faithful step. His understanding reaches beyond your view.
Father, give me wisdom where I need direction, patience where I must wait, and humility when I do not understand. Help me follow Your Word and trust Your character. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Live with this truth: Return to one Scripture from this study. Ask God for wisdom before your next decision, and practise what His Word teaches.
God’s wisdom sees what my understanding cannot.
Love God. Love Others. Stay the Course in the Word.
