Sayings of the Wise #1 - Seek God’s Justice (Pro. 22:22–23)

The Thirty Sayings of the Wise

Saying 1: God Defends the Vulnerable

🌿 Introduction

Every journey has a first step. Our first step into The Thirty Sayings of the Wise begins with a powerful reminder: God sees, God cares, and God defends.

Sometimes the poor and powerless are overlooked or taken advantage of—at work, in a neighborhood, or even within a family. But God is not blind to injustice. This first saying invites us to consider how we treat those with less power than ourselves.

📖 The Verse (NLT)

“Don’t rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court. For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.”
— Proverbs 22:22–23

✨ Explanation

This is both a warning and a reassurance. The vulnerable may lack influence in a human court, but they are not without a defender. The Lord sees those who exploit them and takes their cause seriously.

Wisdom teaches us to use whatever strength or influence we have to protect and serve others.

🌍 Real-Life Example

Think of an employer who withholds fair pay from workers who cannot afford to challenge it, or someone who takes advantage of a neighbor’s difficult circumstances. This saying asks us to see the person who bears the cost—and to remember that God sees them too.

💭 Reflective Question

When I see someone treated unfairly because they are poor or overlooked, how do I usually respond?

Read through these responses and notice which one sounds most like you:

  1. I jump in quickly to set things right.
  2. I organize a plan to correct the wrong.
  3. I act calmly but firmly to address the injustice.
  4. I speak up boldly and rally others.
  5. I comfort and encourage the person.
  6. I express myself creatively to highlight the unfairness.
  7. I think carefully and look for a fair solution.
  8. I quietly listen and offer practical support.
  9. I share heartfelt words to inspire hope.
  10. I stay steady and dependable, even if I respond slowly.
  11. I lighten the burden and reassure with kindness.
