The Thirty Sayings of the Wise - Introduction

🌿 Welcome to The Thirty Sayings of the Wise

Happy October 1 Women of Wisdom!

The book of Proverbs is like a treasure chest — full of short, memorable lessons that teach us how to live wisely. And right in Proverbs 22:20–21, the writer leans in and tells us something special:

“I have written thirty sayings for you, filled with advice and knowledge. In this way, you may know the truth and take an accurate report to those who sent you.” (NLT)

From that point on, we are introduced to a unique collection called “The Thirty Sayings of the Wise.” These aren’t just random thoughts. They are carefully chosen gems meant to guide us through everyday life — lessons about justice, relationships, money, work, self-control, family, leadership, and above all, reverence for God.

✨ Why Thirty?

Thirty is just the right number to carry with you. It’s manageable, memorable, and practical. In the ancient world, wisdom was often shared in lists (like Egypt’s Thirty Instructions of Amenemope), making it easier to learn step by step. In the same way, these thirty sayings are God’s wisdom arranged so we can actually live it out day by day.

📖 What Do These Sayings Do?

They’re not just words on a page — they shape us.

  • Train our character — showing us how to treat others, especially the poor and vulnerable.

  • Guard our hearts — warning us against greed, anger, laziness, and destructive choices.

  • Guide our relationships — teaching us to walk in truth, fairness, and integrity.

  • Anchor us in God’s ways — reminding us that wisdom begins with reverence for the Lord.

💭 Reflection Prompt: Share in the comments below: Which one of these do you most want God to work on in your life right now?

📝 How We’ll Walk Through Them

You don’t have to worry about preparing or figuring it out — everything will be posted right here for you. All you need to do is read, understand, and respond.

Here’s what each post will include:

  1. The Verse — straight from the New Living Translation (NLT).

  2. An Explanation — what it means in its biblical context.

  3. A Real-Life Example — how this saying plays out in today’s world.

  4. A Reflective Question — with 12 possible responses (based on the 12 temperament blends). All you do is choose the one that best fits you.

Note: Each reflection will connect to the twelve temperament styles. Your daily choice will reveal how you personally might answer based on your unique blend. That way, this journey isn’t just about learning Proverbs — it’s about discovering how God has uniquely wired you.

The sayings become more than ancient wisdom — they become a mirror for our lives and a compass for our choices.

🌟 Conclusion

As we journey through these Thirty Sayings, let’s remember: wisdom isn’t just about what we know — it’s about how we live. Each saying is like a stepping stone across the river of life, helping us cross safely through decisions, relationships, and challenges.

These sayings call us to:

  • Listen closely — wisdom doesn’t shout, it whispers to the attentive.

  • Live faithfully — truth and integrity are the foundation of a godly life.

  • Lean on God — He is the Defender of the poor, the Judge of all, and the Source of true wisdom.

By reflecting honestly, we not only learn about ourselves, but we also invite God to shape us. Wisdom becomes not just a path to walk, but a companion to walk with — always pointing us to Christ, who is Himself the wisdom of God:

📖 “But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:24, NLT)

So as we begin, let’s open our hearts to be challenged, encouraged, and changed by wisdom that is timeless yet practical, ancient yet alive.
