Saying 13: Let Parents Delight in Wisdom
Proverbs 23:15–16
“My son, if your heart is wise,My own heart also will be glad; And my inmost being will rejoiceWhen your lips speak what is right.”
They move from the heart (“if your heart is wise”) to the lips (“when your lips speak what is right”), showing that true wisdom begins inwardly and then expresses itself outwardly.
💖 Core Idea
When a child’s choices flow from wisdom, it brings delight to the parent’s heart.
This is both literal (for earthly parents) and symbolic (for our Heavenly Father).
It teaches that:
Wisdom is not proven by talent or talk but by heart posture and truthful speech.
The truest reward of raising children is not success, beauty, or wealth — but to hear them speak and act rightly.
Every time we speak truth and live wisely, we cause God Himself to rejoice (see 3 John 1:4).
Applications
1. Parental Delight
This proverb reflects the soul-satisfaction of a godly parent.
A wise son or daughter becomes a living testimony of the parent’s teaching and God’s grace.
It’s not about perfection but about progress — wisdom lived out from the heart.
2. Spiritual Reflection
Solomon (a father speaking to his son) also mirrors God the Father’s delight when His children walk in truth.
Just as parents rejoice in a child’s good words, God rejoices when His people speak rightly and reflect His character.
3. Maturity of Heart and Speech
The heart (attitude) and lips (expression) are inseparable.
True wisdom transforms what we feel inside and what we say outside — it produces harmony between thought, tone, and truth.
🌸 Practical Takeaways
For Parents: Rejoice in growth more than in achievement. Celebrate character over comfort.
For Children: Your words carry weight — they can refresh or grieve those who love you most.
For Everyone: Make your heart wise through humility and your lips truthful through grace. When your inner and outer life align, Heaven smiles.
💬 A Mother’s Reflections
To my first child:
You entered the world with determination already written in your eyes.
You like to take charge, to lead, to make things happen.
I’ve seen your strength turn storms into stillness when guided by grace.
My heart rejoices every time your boldness bows to wisdom—
when you choose gentleness over control and lead with love instead of pride.
To my second child:
You make every room brighter.
Your laughter dances through our home like sunlight after rain.
You speak before you think, but your heart is pure and warm.
I delight most when your joy becomes kindness,
when your words build others instead of filling silence,
and your smile carries truth, not just charm.
To my third child:
You notice what others overlook.
Your eyes read between the lines; your heart weighs every word.
You crave order, depth, and meaning—
and sometimes you carry the world too heavily.
My heart rejoices when you let go of perfection and hold on to peace,
when your words offer mercy instead of measure.
To my fourth child:
You are the quiet calm in the middle of our noise.
You take your time, and that time brings peace to us all.
You dislike conflict, yet you carry quiet courage within.
I smile most when you speak up gently for what’s right—
when your stillness becomes strength, and your peace becomes power.
🌿 Closing Thought
Each of you delights me in a different way.
One brings calm, another strength, another laughter, and another insight.
But my greatest joy is the same for all—
when your hearts are wise,
and your lips speak what is right.
