RIGHTEOUS

THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD · A–Z

R — Righteous

The God Who Is Right in All His Ways

Doing what is right can require courage. It may mean telling the truth, keeping a promise, treating someone fairly, or admitting that we have been wrong.

Scripture directs our attention to the One whose character and actions are perfectly right. God is righteous. His ways are true, His judgments are upright, and His works are holy.

There are many words beginning with R that help us describe God. Here, our focus is Righteous—the One we can trust and whose ways we are called to follow.

Bring your Bible and take your time. Read slowly, pause to pray, and consider how this truth can shape your trust in God and your everyday choices.

“The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.”

Psalm 145:17

Truth to carry: God is righteous—I can trust His character and seek to walk in His ways.

Follow the PROMPTS pattern: Prayer · Read · Observe · Meditate · Praise · Thanksgiving · Share. Scripture quotations are from the King James Version (KJV). Select a Scripture reference to read the passage.

P — Prayer

Righteous God, thank You that all Your ways are right. Open my heart to understand Your Word and trust Your character. Forgive my sin through Jesus Christ, correct what is wrong in my life, and give me grace to obey You. Help me speak truthfully, act fairly, and respond with humility. Amen.

Ask God to… help you trust Him in one difficult situation and recognise one choice where you need courage to do what is right.

R — Read & Reflect

Read these passages slowly. Notice what they reveal about God’s character, His judgments, and His saving work through Christ.

  • “The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” — Psalm 145:17
  • “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” — Deuteronomy 32:4
  • “Righteous art thou, O LORD, and upright are thy judgments.” — Psalm 119:137
  • “…that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” — Romans 3:26

Read all of Romans 3:21–26. Notice our need as sinners, the gift of grace, redemption through Christ, and the righteousness of God.

Pause and reflect: Which word or phrase helps you see the beauty of His righteous character?

Name it before God: Bring Him a situation that feels unfair, a decision you need wisdom for, or a failure you need to confess.

O — Observe

What do these passages reveal?

  • God is righteous in all His ways. His righteousness belongs to the whole of His character and work.
  • His work is perfect. Deuteronomy describes Him as the Rock, true and without sin.
  • His judgments are upright. We can seek guidance in His Word.
  • All of us need His grace. Romans acknowledges that all have sinned and fallen short of His glory.
  • God remains just as He saves. Through Christ, He puts right with Himself those who believe in Jesus.

Pause: Which observation strengthens your trust? Which one invites you to respond with humility?

M — Meditate

God is righteous. He is perfectly true, holy, and just. Everything He does is consistent with His righteous character.

When life feels unfair or confusing, we can bring our questions and grief before Him. We may understand only part of what is happening, but His Word gives us reason to trust His character and seek His wisdom.

His righteousness also helps us see our need. We have all sinned. Romans 3 points us to forgiveness and a right standing with God through the redemption found in Jesus Christ. We come to Him in repentance and faith, depending on His grace.

Read 2 Corinthians 5:21. Reflect on what Christ has done for sinners and the righteousness we receive in Him.

Grace also shapes how we live. As we follow Christ, we learn to speak truthfully, keep our commitments, treat others fairly, and acknowledge wrongdoing.

Because God is righteous, I can…

  • Trust the integrity of His character.
  • Seek guidance in His Word.
  • Confess my sin and look to Christ for forgiveness.
  • Receive correction with humility.
  • Choose honesty and fairness in daily life.
  • Do what is right even when it is difficult.

Look back: When has God’s Word corrected your thinking or helped you make a right choice? Thank Him for His guidance.

Faith declaration: Lord, Your ways are right. I trust Your character, depend on Your grace, and ask for help to obey Your Word.

A prayer to carry: Lord, lead me in Your righteous ways.

Put This Truth into Practice

Choose one area to bring before God:

  • My words: Is there a truth I need to speak or an exaggeration I need to correct?
  • My dealings with others: Am I acting fairly and keeping my commitments?
  • My response to correction: Can I acknowledge a mistake and make amends?
  • My private choices: What step of obedience would honour God when no one else sees?

Pause and pray. Then take one practical step with His help.

P — Praise

Praise God for His righteous and trustworthy character.

  • Lord, You are righteous in all Your ways. — Psalm 145:17
  • Your work is perfect. — Deuteronomy 32:4
  • You are true and without sin. — Deuteronomy 32:4
  • Your judgments are upright. — Psalm 119:137
  • You are just and put believers right with Yourself through Christ. — Romans 3:26
  • Through Christ, we receive righteousness in Him. — 2 Corinthians 5:21

Praise pause: Continue in your own words. Worship Him for His truth, holiness, justice, and grace.

T — Thanksgiving

Thank God for the confidence and direction His righteousness gives.

  • Thank You that I can trust Your character.
  • Thank You for Your Word and its guidance.
  • Thank You for forgiveness and redemption through Christ.
  • Thank You for correcting me when I need to change.
  • Thank You for grace to grow in obedience.
  • Thank You for helping me act with honesty and fairness.

Make it personal: Complete the sentence, “Lord, thank You for guiding me toward what is right when __________.”

Choose one word of thanksgiving: Truth · Justice · Grace · Forgiveness · Guidance · Integrity · Hope. You may choose your own.
