J — Just

A Conversation About God’s Righteousness

Pull up a chair and imagine an open Bible on the table. A question has brought us together: Can we trust God to do what is right, even when life feels unfair?

Welcome to an imagined conversation between a Bible study guide and readers exploring the character of God. Some of their questions may be your questions too.

There are many words beginning with J that help us describe God. Here, we focus on Just—the God who always acts in perfect righteousness.

Listen to the questions. Consider your own answers. Pause when needed, reflect deeply, and pray often. You may read in one sitting or spread the conversation over several days.

P — Prayer

Guide: Before we begin, let us ask the Lord to teach us.

Father, as we study Your Word, help us understand Your character more clearly. Teach us to trust You more deeply. Open our hearts and minds, and help us know You better. Guide us to live in ways that reflect Your truth and righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Ask God to… help you trust His justice in one difficult situation and act rightly in your own response.

R — Read

Guide: Let us begin with what Scripture says about God.

• “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” — Deuteronomy 32:4
• “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” — Genesis 18:25
• “The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” — Psalm 145:17

Read the passages slowly. Notice the words that describe His character, His actions, and His judgments.

O — Observe

Guide: What words stand out to you?

Reader 1: I noticed Rock and perfect.

Reader 2: I noticed truth and without iniquity.

Reader 3: I noticed judgment, just, and right.

Guide: What do those words reveal about God?

Reader 1: He is dependable.

Reader 2: He is truthful and free from wrongdoing.

Reader 3: Everything He does is righteous.

Guide: Yes. God is Just. His character gives us reason to trust His judgments.

What does “just” mean? In Deuteronomy 32:4, the Hebrew word translated “just” is tsaddiq, meaning righteous or just. God’s justice expresses His perfect righteousness. He judges truly and acts rightly.

Pause and reflect: What encouraged you in these observations? What challenged you? Take a few quiet moments before continuing.

M — Meditate

“If God is just, why do bad things happen?”

Reader 1: I have wondered about that, especially when people suffer unfairly.

Guide: That is a serious question, and Scripture gives us room to bring our grief and questions to God. Sin and injustice cause real suffering. We often cannot explain why a particular hardship has occurred.

We can hold on to what God has revealed: He is righteous, He sees wrongdoing, and He will judge the world justly through Jesus Christ. Read Acts 17:30–31. His justice reaches beyond what we can see at present.

“Will I always understand what God is doing?”

Reader 2: So trusting His justice does not mean I will understand everything?

Guide: We have limited understanding. Faith rests on God’s character while we seek wisdom, pray, and wait. We can trust that He does what is right even when we cannot yet see how events fit together.

“Does God always give us what we deserve?”

Reader 3: How do His justice and mercy fit together?

Guide: All of us need mercy because all of us have sinned. At the cross, we see God’s justice and grace revealed together. Jesus gave Himself for sinners, and God grants forgiveness and a right standing before Him through faith in Christ.

Read Romans 3:23–26. God is just and the One who justifies those who believe in Jesus. His mercy is fully consistent with His righteousness.

“What does God’s justice mean for me personally?”

Reader 4: How should this truth shape my daily life?

Guide: You can trust His character, bring Him your concerns, and leave final judgment in His hands. You are also called to act justly: speak truthfully, treat people fairly, acknowledge wrong, and seek what is right.

“To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.” — Proverbs 21:3

“What if I struggle with what God is allowing?”

Reader 5: Sometimes I feel confused, hurt, or unable to make sense of what is happening.

Guide: Bring those feelings honestly to Him. In Psalm 13, David asks, “How long?” and also expresses trust in God’s mercy. Honest lament can be part of a life of faith.

Ask for wisdom, seek support from trustworthy people, and keep turning to His Word. Trusting God’s justice can give you courage to address wrongdoing and seek help.

Pause and pray: Is there a situation you do not understand? What would trusting God and doing what is right look like in that situation?

Lord, help me trust Your righteous character. Give me wisdom, courage, and grace to respond in a way that honours You.

Because God is just, I can…

• Trust Him when life feels unfair.
• Bring Him my questions and grief.
• Receive His mercy through faith in Christ.
• Choose honesty and fairness in my own actions.
• Rest in the assurance that His final judgment will be right.

P — Praise

Guide: What is one reason we can praise God for being just?

Reader 1: I praise Him because His work is perfect.

Reader 2: I praise Him because He is truthful.

Reader 3: I praise Him because His judgments are righteous.

Reader 4: I praise Him because I can trust Him when life feels unfair.

Reader 5: I praise Him because His wisdom is greater than mine.

Praise pause: Add your own words of worship. Lord, You are just and right, and You are worthy of my praise.

T — Thanksgiving

Guide: Let us thank Him together.

Lord, thank You for always doing what is right. Thank You for seeing what we cannot see, for being truthful, and for judging with perfect righteousness. Thank You for Your mercy through Jesus Christ. Help us trust You and reflect Your character in how we treat others. Amen.

Make it personal: Name one reason you are thankful for God’s justice.

Declarations — Praise God for Who He Is

Which declaration especially strengthens your faith? You are welcome to share it in the comments and briefly say why.

• Almighty: My God is Almighty. Nothing is too hard for Him.
• Benevolent (Good): God is good in all His ways.
• Compassionate: God sees me and cares for me with mercy.
• Deliverer: God is my refuge and deliverer.
• Eternal: My God reigns forever.
• Faithful: God keeps His promises and can be trusted completely.
• Gracious: God’s grace is sufficient for every season.
• Holy: God is holy, worthy, and unlike any other.
• Immutable: God never changes; His love and faithfulness remain constant.
• Just: God always does what is right, and I can trust Him even when I do not understand.

A note to your future self: What is one truth from this conversation you want to remember? Write it somewhere you can revisit when you need encouragement.

Live with this truth: In the days ahead, return to these Scriptures. Bring one difficult situation to God and choose one practical way to act with honesty, fairness, or compassion.

Because God is just, I can trust Him and seek to do what is right.
